About this deal

If anyone out there's writing Bateman fan-fic I'd be equally happy to spend more time with the Mrs, who takes no shit. The narrator couldn't really do the american accent assigned to one of the characters but other than that did an ok job. The way it is written is quite lighthearted and often very very funny, but the story is far from amusing, and I found it difficult to square the one with the other.

Grealis does state, however, that "in Dan Starkey, Bateman has created a gloriously irreverent and amusing (anti) hero" and concludes "if you can forgive the hopelessly improbable plot, 'Divorcing Jack' remains a solid and humorous debut". This does not seem to be satisfactory for Keegan, but luckily for Starkey, he and his wife are saved in the last minute by Cooper, who storms in dressed as a nun wearing guns. A mint shared with a woman he barely knows as his wife whispers in his ears, "You have twenty-four hours to move out. He spends a fair bit of the story far too drunk (which increasingly appeals very little to me as a reader: drunks tend to be out-of-control bores in fiction as well as real life). On joining his new flame at her place: "Margaret went and opened the door slightly and an elderly Jack Russell pressed his face through the gap.

They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. It's good to see David Thewlis, one of the finest British actors of his generation, play the lead in a British film – as he did in his prime, and not a side character in Hollywoodian films like Harry Potter.

Instead he's languished in supporting roles in Hollywood with other stars -- including Brando and Dennis Quaid -- who also should have known better. Then Dan meets Margaret, a beautiful and apparently impoverished student, and things begin to get out of hand. Griffiths appears in a brief but spectacular role as a nurse temporarily dressed up as a sexy nun; she comes to the rescue when Starkey — who takes a great deal of punishment during the course of the film — needs urgent medical attention.

My nose had always been big, but it had not bent perceptibly to the left before I started going out with her. As a Catholic cop in the RUC, Duffy’s character is constantly ambivalent, conflicted, pulled all ways and mistrusted on all sides. The plot is set around the Northern Irish reporter Dan Starkey who gets entangled in a web of political intrigue and Irish sectarian violence, at the same time as Northern Ireland is set to elect a new Prime Minister. Adapted by Bateman himself it is faithful to the novel, which means the style on screen is the same no holds barred, NI wit and sardonic, jet black comic take on life that appeared on the page too.I generally liked the book and no small part of that comes from recognizing the small bars and larger political landscape of Belfast from the mid 90s. Faint remainder mark to base; Screenplay published to coincide with release of the movie starring Rachel Griffiths who appears on the back cover as a gun toting nun. In a weird moment of black comedy, he accidentally kills the victim’s mother when he collides violently with her on the stairs as he makes a getaway.
