About this deal

The subterranean chambers were once home to a witches’ vault and a stone circle, said to contain an evil presence. They are also the ex-stalking ground of infamous killers Burke and Hare. The first half is supposed to be scary – I think – but instead of creating a slow, creeping spookiness, the author tries to make every sentence/action scary. This results in absolutely nothing being scary instead. I had HIGH hopes for this one, I am all about ghost hunting and seek out books about it, but also, if available series and movies. So I was very excited about this one. Sadly, while there were good moments it just wasn’t all up to my expectations and there were things that just threw out the momentum. I will be doing a good/not so good review. There were so many exciting characters to fall in love with in this book, and lots of different personalities. Uncle Rufus was a particular favourite of mine, and I’d love to meet someone as intriguing and as eccentric as him. Mr Pig the parrot was another favourite of mine too. A parrot who swears and head bands to thrash metal… where can I get myself one of those?! I loved the friendship dynamic between Eve, Tom, and Clovis. They were more like family than friends, and they always took care of each other, no matter the danger, and there was plenty of it in this story. Yvette Fielding's The Ripper of Whitechapel is the second book in her Ghost Hunter Chronicles, following the excellent The House in the Woods.

Baxter, Biddy; Barnes, Edward (1989). "Chapter Nine: Crest of a Wave". Blue Peter: The Inside Story. Letchworth: Ringpress. pp.214–216. ISBN 0-948955-50-3.

Paranormal activity

In 2002, Yvette Fielding and her husband Karl Beattie established their own television production company, Antix Productions. Their first production was Most Haunted for the British TV channel Living. In the show, Fielding and paranormal experts investigate various supposedly haunted locations around Britain, in the hopes that paranormal activity may be documented by the crew. In 2006, Fielding presented and produced Ghosthunting With..., a paranormal show for ITV2 which shows Fielding leading various celebrities around haunted locations. I am happy that we get to see each of the 3 younger character’s POV. OK, Clovis was a bit hit/miss, but I really liked Eve and Tom! They were such fun characters. When Clovis, Eve and Tom decide to play with a ouija board in an old abandoned house on Halloween, none of them foresees the horrors they’re about to unleash. What starts out as a bit of fun, soon transcends into something far more terrifying when a distressed and determined spirit follows them home. Before long the friends are caught up in a series of events beyond their wildest imaginings and their journey as ghost hunters begins.

This book was incredibly spooky! The storyline was definitely a whirlwind of ghostly encounters and spine tingling creepiness. It feels so real that you find it hard to separate the book and what you’re reading to you’re own reality (maybe that’s just me because I live with very mischievous poltergeist).

Early career

I think this may be up there with the scariest books I've ever read, and I genuinely love adult horror! Scarier than all Stephen King's I've read, and even the modern horrors... We are really missing her and she is missing us,” says Fielding. “We are a very close family. When she went off, Karl and I were just hugging each other and holding hands and going, ‘Our baby!’ But she calls us each night.” The kids feel somewhat unrealistic. The author was born in the 1960 and I think it's obvious that the doesn't spend much time with today's kids. I love books where the young characters are treated by adults with respect. Eve, Clovis and Tom have proven their worth in the past, so Detective Inspector Rutherford has no hesitation in making them part of the team, under the guidance of Uncle Rufus. So frightened was Yvette Fielding by demonic activity at Edinburgh’s Niddry Street Vaults, she came close to quitting.
