In the all-digital graphic novel Batman: Digital Justice, which is set some time in the future long after the original Batman has died, Sheila Romero, also known as the hit pop music star Gata (the Spanish female noun for "cat") and daughter of the Mayor of Gotham City, is jealous of the new Batman, James Gordon, because media coverage of his activities have been cutting into her airtime. Maria confesses that she had planned to transplant her brain into Gata's body, but she could not bring herself to do it because she loved her "daughter" too much. Maria then dies in Sheila's arms. Original first-run comic series put under the imprint's banner. Usually, but not always, presented in a prestige format with different publishing schedules varying between each series. It falls short. It falls short on the emotional weight of Selina's circumstances. On her grief, and loneliness and regrets. The story and art alone is good enough that I'd love it for just that, but there's more to it. There's a true understanding of Selina Kyle, and nods to every era, from the Jim Balent purple costume to a heavy dose of the Brubaker/Cooke version, along with maybe the best interpretation of Killer Croc I've ever seen, a really wonderful use of Poison Ivy and Jason Blood/The Demon. In addition, the blossoming love story between a retired Riddler and Catwoman works so very well, and I love the story of his daughter Edie and Selina too.
