About this deal

If you have to use a bicep-building level of force to remove a glow plug they might either be damaged or have been in the car for too long. And with our different Glow Plugs come different Installation steps to follow. See below for our dedicated installation procedures.

I'm pretty convinced my clutch is on its last legs so that's the next job so hopefully this will have time to penetrate. Large DHL delivery from AF arrives tomorrow! Before I leave for the airport, hopefully! First clean the glow plug channel and the thread in the cylinder head to remove oil and combustion products. Then screw in the glow plug by hand. Important: Make sure that no dirt enters the combustion chamber. Instead of an aluminum threaded housing we use a steel housing that meets original glow plug specifications. This means you are less likely to cross thread the reamer and the threads hold up better because they are steel.Easy to access 12 mm hex head to drive the reamer into the hole. Because the head is steel it will allow you to tap on it without damage to the head. With another 2 hours I would have had 5 out and been delighted but I had to finish because the garage closes at 6. I turned up at 9.02 (they open at 9) and all 6 bays were occupied, one was by the car that turned into the road just before me! I had to wait until 11 before I could get started... Carbon can be the root cause of a problem, acting as a heat soak, causing hard starting and premature heating coil failure. A proprietary glow plug reamer set should be used with silicone free grease to remove the carbon (Fig 3). A melted or broken heater tube tip is a sign of over voltage (fault with the control system), or abnormal combustion (this can be the result of incorrect injection timing, flow rate or excessive lubricating oil entering the combustion chamber). A swollen heater tube tip can also be a sign of over voltage.

Unscrew: Then try to unscrew it once again and carefully loosen the glow plug out of the cylinder head with a suitable tool. (Do not exceed the maximum loosening torque. Always stop before reaching the tightening torque, if necessary try once again by heating up.) Will update when I need make some progress worth reporting. I do plan to add injection cleaner to the full tank of fuel I have and will look into a seafoam or equivalent product also. In particular after baking (coking) between the glow rod and the cylinder head, the cylinder head bore is often soiled by residues from burning or dirt particles. Such coking can easily and safely be removed from cylinder heads with 10-mm threads.

Replacement work made easy

Using the same tool you used to remove the old glow plugs, install the new glow plugs being careful not to over-tighten them (this will make them harder to remove next time). Our new reamer comes with a proper size / material cleaning brush and PDF instructions on how to properly remove your glow plugs AND use this reamer on the following models: 1980-1985 617 and 617 diesel engine with cast iron cylinder heads. This includes 1978 to 1980 300SD, 1980 to 1983 240D, 1980 to 1985 300D/300CD/300TD and 1981 to 1985 300SD. PERFORMANCE: This tool and procedure can improve cold engine starts, reduce shaking and missing at start-up and reduce engine smoke on those cold mornings. THE NUMBER ONE REASON FOR PREMATURE GLOW PLUG FAILURE IS EXCESS CARBON BUILDUP IN THE CHAMBER! Almost every old diesel needs to have this done and the sooner the better! I guarantee that you will be very pleased with how this reamer performs - especially if you have used other reamers in the past.

Cars may have become more complex over the years, yet changing your vehicle's glow plugs is, in most cases, still a job that you can handle yourself. Section 1 covers all standard in build Glow Plugs. These are the Standard, Ceramic and Instant Start System Glow Plug. Again, spray masses and masses of top-quality penetrating oil around the plug as it sits in its shaftJust pulled mine. It's a 6 to 8 hours job. If you don't rush it it works well. Thanks for the nice description and the pictures. I got them all out but had an angular drill and a puller on stand by. Soaking them in oil and having a hot engine really helps, Starts like new. Happy I did it, finally. You're past the hood, you made it even further and you've cleared your way to the Glow Plug. Now is the time you need to manage the torque. Here is our step-by-step guide to removing the plug: Installation and removal only with the appropriate custom tool. Push the tool onto the Integrated Pressure Sensor Glow Plug so that the glow plug‘s hexagon head is completely covered; note the torque. I sought to begin work on a baking hot engine. Disco Mikey says to start with a cold engine as its easier and I know which one of the two of us I would trust more!
