Superheroes amidst medieval walls

The big fumetti festival, otherwise known as Lucca Comics & Games, is the town’s main attraction, and not just for nerds. All the residents of this Tuscan town—whose main square, when viewed from above, is completely round—get involved with the festival come October. Lucca is a combination of art, history and, once a year, comic strips. “The city of 100 towers and 100 churches” dons its superhero outfit and opens its doors to a public aspiring to escape reality, even if for just a few days. Once you pass through the medieval walls—which are still intact—Lucca becomes a curious mixture historic architecture and of Pokémon and Super Mario Bros. The next event is 15 October to 1 November. That is when the town will be converted into “the place where everyone can become a hero for a day”.
