About this deal

In the dry-down Ambre Sultan devolves into a modern amber composition with traces of aromatic herbs, and nutty beeswax with minor muskiness that sits on top of vanilla. Ambre Sultan will never not smell glorious to me, though. The love child of a Christmas tree and a lump of cassonade, it smells like a golden resin melting down on your skin on a hot day, then hardening again like a layer of shellac. It is light and dark all at once, its breathy presence one of dusty books, sunlit herbs, burnt incense, and polished wood.

Labdanum joins them: well fits this slightly herbaceous and own kind of cistus in the previous fragrance weaving, before the balsamic beauties - tolu balsam, styrax and finally vanilla gently sand off any rough edges in the previous creation and round off this yet somewhat idiosyncratic mixture. I must say, he did not take my breath away, as Bois D´ascèse did before him, for example, but he overwhelmed me in his gentleness and coherence in a different way. Upon the first spray, I knew this was something special, just as was my experience with Chergui. Equally enticing, and somewhat scary, with each new wearing, Ambre Sultan unfold itself more and eventually, told me the whole story. So far, I find myself in the middle of a luxurious "salon car of fragrances" that richly surrounds me with all the secrets of 1001 nights. Perfume is a form of writing, an ink, a choice made in the first person, the dot on the i, a weapon, a courteous gesture, part of the instant, a consequence. SERGE LUTENS In ideal conditions, I could smell this one even after showering, and the next day. Don’t overspray, and keep the number of applications to a lower level since the initial projection, and sillage can get the wrong kind of attention from your coworkers or new people you meet. I enter an area of sensory-impressive luxury in the scent of spices, precious balsamic oils, smoky resins and embracing warmth. One must be aware that this type of fragrance will wear you if you don’t find it comfortable while wearing it. The scent that brings out attention, and is one of those “ you know who is the boss” types of fragrances.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Grand Soir – an amber fragrance released in 2016. The main notes include amber, Siam benzoin, and vanilla. Another winner among the blended ambers is Nobile 1942’s Ambra Nobile, with its mix of warm amber, licorice, and sandalwood. I have only a tiny vial of this and want more. Lovers of lavender will appreciate Ambre Précieux by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier. The lavender opens the show, but is immediately followed by nutmeg, vanilla, and a delicious balsamic amber. I can even forgive this perfume its ugly red bottle with the hideously huge bejeweled cap. King of the hill must certainly be Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan. It opens big, with a large throw of balsamic amber tempered with herbs and spices. Coriander, bay leaf, and oregano lead in the slightly astringent opening, but the drydown is a pure syrupy powder delight. This one requires the right frame of mind, as it is not an everyday sort of fragrance, and commitment, as it easily lasts all day.The perfume opens us very green, woody, and boozy. Straight away, there is no denying that the green aroma is coming from the combination of herbal notes of oregano, and Bay leaf. In 1967, Christian Dior, who was about to launch his make-up line, called on him. He will create for this house colors, style, and images. His vision is finally unified by photography. At the start of the 1970s, the famous editor-in-chief of US Vogue, Diana Vreeland, did not hesitate to proclaim her enthusiasm: “Serge Lutens, Revolution of Make-up!”. The success is resounding. Serge Lutens becomes the symbol of freedom given by make-up for a whole new generation. In 1974, echoing his taste for cinema and the mythical actresses who inhabit it, he directed a short film: “Les Stars”. At that time, he traveled and discovered Morocco and then Japan. These two countries, with such rich and different cultures, will come together in him and will affirm his way of seeing and feeling. Like Chergui, Ambre Sultan's appeal has been diminished somewhat by a veritable tidal wave of niche competition, some of which is quite formidable. Still, Ambre Sultan distinguishes itself through delicate construction and its overall completeness. There is nothing "missing" here.

The resins (Benzoe and Labdanum belong to my favorites meanwhile) provide the slightly sweetish depth and spices (Here Koreander and Oregano, which clearly perceptibly weave through the course) lift it up again and make sure that the scent does not sink one-dimensionally hard, as it is unfortunately often the case with many less thoughtfully composed Orientals.Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea – an amber fragrance released in 1998. The main notes include amber, incense, and myrrh. The lasting power is 24+ hours with great projection. Would I recommend Ambre Sultan as the reference amber today? Maybe, but more than likely not. Ambre Sultan straddles the line between classic and contemporary well enough to feel timeless, which is a great virtue, and it feels more complete to me than some of the others that get nearly as much attention. In that regard, you gotta give it credit. In case you are in doubt about whether you should consider buying this fragrance or not, it’s always good to take a look at Scent Grail’s S.P.A. Signature Factor Guide.

It fascinates me by an all-embracing rounded smell picture and no single corner, edge or note disturbs me also only a short moment long. In the early '90s, inspired by his time spent in Morocco, Lutens started to create perfumes, eventually launching them under his own brand in 2000. Made in France but inspired by the rich aromas of Morocco, the fragrances marry a blueprint of iconic French chicness and the luxurious notes associated with North Africa. And trust me when I say all Serge Lutens perfumes are wearable, beautiful and unique. Oh, and it's not just me who thinks it. In fact, Kate Moss once shared her love for the brand's cult Fleurs d'Oranger perfume in an interview with Evening Standard.A perfume line created by Serge Lutens in his own image. Minimalist, straight lined, angular and uncompromising, each of these bottles with their refined style reflects the exacting nature and character of their creator. A sobriety which enhances the richness and sumptuousness of the perfumes, whose scents and colours are as numerous and as nuanced as precious stones and our personalities. The musty and earthy combination brings out incense qualities, and it is a ghost note hiding in plain sight. The warm, and tame base will remind you of many more expensive niche amber fragrances which obviously were “ inspired” by Ambre Sultan, just don’t recreate this kind of powerful experience. But just this twist makes Ambre sultan Eau de Parfum so incredibly pleasant, so exciting, so exciting - and so wearable! We crossed Borneo, Kalimantan and Saravak and went to visit Brunei. With the sultan. Perhaps the richest man in the world
