About this deal

Although this is a bit of a radical method for dealing with Artex, it will undoubtedly cover the substance well and provide you a smooth surface that may be replastered later. Until the mid-1980s, artex was made with asbestos to strengthen it. In 1999, the UK government banned the use and import of chrysotile asbestos.

Size of the removal area: The lengthier the removal process takes and the more expensive the labour is, the larger the area of Artex. People will be put off buying your home as they think it will cost them a lot to remove the textured coatings using a specialist. There are a lot of decorators out there now that just don’t want the job of removing it.There are 5 common ways to remove Artex: boarding over, plaster overskimming, complete removal, chemical removal and steaming. It was unsurprising therefore that more than one in four admitted they should have invested more time in finding the right home before they moved in. Boarding over: In this procedure, the original Artex ceiling is covered with plasterboard. The surface is subsequently plastered with a number of layers to make it level. It’s suggested that you sand down the Artex decoration first, and then plaster it. But really, whichever you choose, it’s not going to be something that you get finished in a day or two.

As with the other solutions, plastering can also be a very messy job, especially if you are doing it yourself so remove any objects form the room and for anything left, cover with plastic dust sheets.

Once all boards are fixed to the surface there’s a few different ways they can be finished. The standard way is to plaster over them, which can be done using the steps above, however there is another way. Firstly make absolutely sure that there are no flaking or loose sections of the artex®, or indeed ceiling or wall. Then remove all obviously “high spots” of artex®, where the stipples hang down. You can do this using a hand scraper or wall scraper and if you want to go the extra step you can also sand it down to get it as flat as possible which will further aid in the final finish, as well as the ease it can be plastered over.

Use a half-inch, wet (water), soft paint brush to define corners and the abutment of the plastered surface to any other. Once the second coat is on it needs to be smoothed out before it cures and goes hard. This is done at the point that when you push your thumb into the surface it only leaves a very slight indentation.
