About this deal

Case Histories has been described as Atkinson's breakthrough, [1] and she has since published four additional novels featuring Brodie: One Good Turn (2006), When Will There Be Good News? She has the care of their wee daughter Candy and Tommy’s teenage son Harry (whose mother mysteriously fell off a cliff) and a house she keeps immaculate. The plot revolves around three seemingly unconnected family tragedies – the disappearance of a three-year-old girl from a garden; the murder of a husband by his wife with an axe; and the apparently motiveless murder of a solicitor's daughter. Having lost his sister, Niamh, to murder when they were both teenagers, Jackson has a lifelong obsession with finding and rescuing missing women, often thinking of himself as a shepherd or sheep dog. At the beginning of series two Jackson's life has taken a surprising turn both personally and professionally.

The story opens in Edinburgh, at the Festival where Julia is appearing in a play which Jackson is financing (to create a part and work for Julia). That day, her husband had walked in and managed to wake Dayna just after she had finally gone to sleep, sending Michelle over the edge. This involves a fair bit of sneaking about with the dog in a backpack as Jackson enters and leaves his hotel. Perhaps Started Early, Took My Dog is in this sense a more traditional crime novel than others in the series. Negotiating the hazards of parenting a teenager in the modern world would be challenge enough for Brodie, whose age is left deliberately sketchy (though basic maths suggests he must be close to a bus pass), but his son’s privileged existence is a constant reminder of his own youth: “By the time Jackson was 13, his mother was already dead of cancer, his sister had been murdered and his brother had killed himself. One Good Turn is next, a hundred pages longer than Case Histories, with a shift in setting from Cambridge to Edinburgh.

There is a lot of nostalgia for things as they used to be - again handled well and wittily by the author. She was 18 and had just began working as an assistant at Theo's law practice for the summer when a mysterious man in a yellow golfing vest came into the building and fatally stabbed her.For example, I haven't even mentioned young Darcy Slee, who accepted a lift from a stranger and is rescued by Jackson in a one page chapter aside towards the end of the book. Often they conceal those hells so expertly, they convince the world they’re happy and normal, even those closest to them.

The train crash had caused a rift in his world, an earthquake crack that seemed to have put an impossible distance between him and the life he shared with Tessa. The second character is Reggie, a girl, a 16 year old waif, who reads latin, has a criminal brother Billy, but works as a sort of nanny (no one uses that title) for Dr Hunter. Thirty years later, Olivia’s sisters, Amelia and Julia, make a discovery that prompts them to hire a private detective. The settings are interesting too, with the second novel set during the Edinburgh Festival, the third in Devon and the fourth and fifth in his home county of Yorkshire.

Jackson and Julia, the actress sister of the last book, are still together, but the relationship is starting to show signs of wear. At times it’s like reading a thriller novel written by Alan Partridge – perhaps a version of Alan’s own detective series ‘Swallow,’ branched out into homicide. This is the second Jackson Brodie book by Kate Atkinson, and it continues exactly where book one left off. Sylvia Land: The eldest of the Land sisters who now lives in a convent under the name Sister Mary Luke.

Intriguing, moving, and funny, the character-driven stories conjure up a richly imagined world in which Brodie attempts to bring resolution to the victims of unexplained mysteries and comfort to the survivors of personal tragedies.
