I love books about two people who love each other, who are against the world, that I often relate to stories like this, wishing I had a Juno in my life. She is found in the streets by Legs, who, as a young adult, is becoming something of a burgeoning artist. The two find their way from the backstreets and city’s pubs to its underground parties and squats, where, on the verge of adulthood, they find a breathing space to begin their real lives. Juno Loves Legs shows the frustration of feeling trapped in a life that is not yours and the ability of friendship to lift us out of our experiences and into a truer version of ourselves.

The main characters go through an awful lot of suffering, which can make this novel rather hard to read and endure at times.

Thus, this is a novel that is the sort of thing that you’re either going to find fault with or probably just adore despite its deficiencies. Juno loves to read, and she spends much of her time in the library, where Missus H, the librarian, acts as a sort of surrogate mother. To be fair, the characters are sometimes unlikeable and the f- and c-words get bandied about a lot, even by youths — who also smoke like chimneys just to get through what they’re going through. Juno Loves Legs is the story of that friendship, in its many incarnations, as seen through the eyes of Juno. The book will, I think, have an extra special resonance for Irish people, and Dubliners in particular.
