About this deal

As the novel unfolds we are shown how beautiful the life of Ruth and Lily is in the present. The only issue is Eleanor, she haunts Ruth's hours waking and sleeping. She, despite outward appearances, has no confidence or self worth. She is broken by what she sees as her failure as a mother to Eleanor. Even with the respect her friends and colleagues clearly have for her, she still can't get past the demons in her head. Making Lily the centre of her world is her way of making it through.

In the ghost story of Eleanor and Ruth, a story shadowed by losses from Ruth’s childhood onwards, the figures of abandoned child and uncaring parent blur into each other. Boyt prefaces Loved and Missed with an epigraph from the macabrely comic and very British writer Stevie Smith’s poem “Maria.” As I got deeper into the novel, however, I recalled another of Smith’s poems, “The Wanderer,” in which a “pitiful ghost” cries out, “You have weaned me too soon, you must nurse me again.” This ghost hints at the “seamy side” of Eleanor’s day-to-day existence that Ruth’s narration conceals—the addict desperately seeking her next fix. Ruth herself, however, uses the poem’s key verb: “I made up my mind to wean myself off Eleanor.” There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. – Albert Einstein It's hard saying goodbye to somebody who has made such an impact in our life, but it's comforting knowing that even though they aren't with us physically anymore, we carry them with us wherever we go.” This quote by Carrie Hamilton perfectly describes what it means to touch the lives of people around you, and to live on in people’s memories forever. 17. “Got a picture of you I carry in my heart; Close my eyes to see it when the world gets dark; Got a memory of you I carry in my soul; I wrap it close around me when the nights get cold.”Become a great reader of books and it will help you with reality, you'll more easily grasp the truth of things and that will set you up for life. The themes of mother and daughter relationships, friendsips, loss and grieving and love were explored with depth, honesty and sensitivity. Ruth's selfless devotion to both Eleanor and Lily was striking and compelling. Ruth spends her life giving to others, making sacrifice after sacrifice with no complaints or self pity; rather a fear that she has wronged those she cares for. When a person passes away, they live on as a treasured memory for the people they touched in life. Many songs about memories touch on this theme. 4. “A life that touches others goes on forever.” Readers who are averse to crying in public be warned: You’ll want to sit with this astounding story at home. I am so moved: it carries a huge emotional power... I ache for them all. Poignant, witty, lyrical and perceptive' Joan Bakewell

Just before Eleanor is fourteen she began staying out and changed to the point that their relationship broke down. The story starts as Ruth takes her baby granddaughter, Lily away from Eleanor and her boyfriend Ben. They are both addicts and their home is not right for a baby.
