About this deal

Some of the secondary characters were a bit flat, but I think that if the author had expanded on them it would be longer book that probably most ten-year-olds wouldn't want to read. Laura is a cared-for child , she’s been shunted from foster home to foster homes whilst her uncle was unaware of her birth thanks to the estrangement after his own parents divorced taking a child each, this is far from the privately educated protagonists of yore. Choisissez n'importe quel titre de notre collection inégalée, y compris des best-sellers et nouveautés. A Lovereading4kids 'Great Read' you may have missed 2011 selection - Shortlisted for the Galaxy Children's Book of the Year Award 2011. A truly outstanding, totally enthralling mystery set in Cornwall, England, this is one of the very best children's mysteries I've ever read.

I think this book is amazing and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the "Laura marlin series! After spending nearly 10 years in the orphanage, laura's uncle who lives in cornwall suprisingly came to adopt her. It also made me think about who you should put your trust in because even the closest person might not be as trustful as you think they are. Unfortunately, Mr Thomas from the council has other ideas and insists the allotment must go to the next person on the waiting list. The Asian family felt stereotyped, and of course, they’re the baddies of the book, because that’s foreigners for you, I guess?Laura loves books, especially detective stories, and wants to become a detective like her favorite fictional detective, Matt Walker. I didn't figure out the mystery before the end of the book, which was really nice because that can be really annoying. It’s a fun little mystery, very famous five-esque (except it’s just Laura) with a nice modern twist. I read this book originally at the beginning of 2020 but thanks to the global situation I was not in the right headspace to really have enjoyed it so I am very thankful to my fellow mystery society members to have the opportunity to really read and deep dive into the story again.

I've already read the World Book Day short story, The Midnight Picnic, and can't wait to start the second book, Kidnap in the Caribbean.

We have been reading together and she has been reading some on her own - have found myself dashing upstairs when she is at school to catch up with where she is in the book! Laura's uncle, Calvin redfern is a mysterious character at first but toward the end of the book he is possibly one of my favourite characters. If I'd have read Kat Wolfe Investigates after reading this, instead of the other way around, I think I might have felt a little cheated. Laura loves novels about the brilliant detective, Matt Walker, and she dreams of the day she can be just like him. I can't really say much about what the plot is, but it really is an exciting adventure from start to finish.

I think the book starts off well, telling of a girl from an orphanage being adopted by her mysterious and kind uncle. Laura Marlin is a very engaging character and I was positive that this would be a great 4 star book until about 30 pages before the end.John’s Laura Marlin series of detective novels, and I get the feeling it’s aimed at older children, maybe around the age of 11 or 12. I thought he was interesting because in the beginning he looked like a normal person who might have had a very bad past and moved in to start a new life but then it turns out that he is actually a detective undercover and solving a mystery.

Laura longs to be adopted and eventually her wish seems to come true and she moves to Cornwall – to Dead Man’s Cove - to live with her uncle.Calvin is the kind of generous uncle any young person would welcome, the vignettes about the different people who try to foster Laura are telling, and even the two dogs in the story have their own personalities. At 17, she spent a year in the UK working as a veterinary nurse before becoming a sports and music journalist.
