About this deal

My father-in-law Neil introduced me to Milliput when I was looking for something to use to make the bark on a wire armature for a mini tree. I’d never heard of it, but he very kindly shared his knowledge with me – as a veteran model boat, aeroplane and railway enthusiast, he’s used Milliput for many years. I wanted to have a go at making a miniature tree and wanted to use wire to make the armature as I’ve watched a few cool tutorials on doing it this way. I wasn’t sure what to cover the wire with until my father-in-law mentioned Milliput. I’d used polymer clay before but Milliput is very different, for a start it’s an air dry material, rather than needing to be baked in the over to harden. Painting Milliput or any other epoxy putty is quite easy if you know what you are doing. I personally did a lot of things wrong, when I painted my first few epoxy putty sculptures which resulted in the paint chipping off, and in some cases, the paint even bubbled before simply peeling clean off of the sculpture. Milliput is kind of annoying to sand if I am being honest. While it is quite easy to sand it I often have the problem, that I accidentally take off to much in one go. So it is actually too easy to sand. Let it harden (this should take no longer than about 4 hours) and then paint the trunk with acrylic paint. You’ll probably need a couple of coats to cover the putty.

Milliput remains a family run company committed to manufacturing a high quality product. We pride ourselves on that our products are manufactured and distributed from our premises in Wales to over 35 countries worldwide. Powder pigment can be mixed in, in small quantities, so that the mixture does not become too dry and crumbly. Strong powder pigment rather than powder paint is better as smaller amounts can be used. There are several downsides to using Milliput for pipe repair. The biggest comes with the fact that it does not have WRAS Approval, meaning it is not certified as safe to use on pipes carrying drinking water.

Different colours can be obtain by cross-mixing or blending from the range of colours that Milliput is available in.

Milliput can be used for repairs on many types of materials including metals, plastics, masonry, wood, glass and ceramics and can be used in places where welding is impractical.

Use the Milliput to form the roots and base of the tree trunk, you may or may not have much wire to cover at the base of the trunk as it will depend on how you’ve formed your tree armature. So my tip for you is working carefully and slowly when sanding epoxy putty as you can easily take off too much. This is especially true when working with a Dremmel. Don’t use a stone bit on your Dremel, a simple sanding bit will be enough. The only issue, that I had with one of my sculptures is that the sun can change the color of the epoxy slightly after a few years. The UV-rays will eventually take effect and change the color slightly towards white but that didn´t bother me and my painted sculptures are still fine.
