About this deal

Yaesu's FC-50 is a microprocessor-controlled antenna tuner that is designed specifically for the FT-891. An FC-50 may be easily coupled with FT-891s and includes all necessary interconnect cables for operation right out of the box. SCU-17 USB Interface Unit Instruction Manual rev. 2018– Instructions to install the USB driver software – follow directions before plugging radio to computer

FT-891 transceivers fully support the ATAS-25 and ATAS-120A Active Tuning Antenna System (optional), allowing for plug-and-play field and mobile operation. I agree that the root cause of the difficulty is separating Sota stations in a pileup is unique to the way we advise our QRG. The callers tend to be nearly coherent and no matter what the dynamic range will we split them up. Roy G4SSH with a lot more experience of CW operating always called me a few 100Hz off frequence, sneeky but effective. That said I would like to try an FT891 in field conditions to see how it performs. The other alternative, as discussed, is the KX3, or similar, with a measured dynamic range of 107dB, I believe this has the best RX measurements for any portable rig. But, there is a hidden gem within this radio. It’s the YAESU Parametric EQ settings available in the TX Audio options in the menu mode. Use the following menu settings as a starting point. Remember to enable the Parametric EQ in the Settings Mode, FUNCTION-2, MEQ. Select with the multifunction knob, and push to highlight MEQ to engage. I get unsolicited “great audio” reports all the time. The radio provides some additional tools as part of its IF DSP. The features of particular interest are Digital Noise Reduction (DNR), Noise Blanker, IF Notch Filter, Digital Notch Filter, and Narrow IF filter. Contour, IF Bandwidth, and IF Shift are not available in AM mode, and you must resort to SSB to get them. More about SSB in a moment. The AGC can be configured as Auto, Fast, Mid, and Slow. Since it is not a ‘set and forget’ setting like the RF control or IPO options, it might be a good candidate for assigning to one of the three user definable buttons below the LCD screen.

The Yaesu FT-891 must be the most popular HF transceivers Yaesu sells today. So many of its users rave about its performance and audio characteristics. Mark, thank you for sharing your experience with the FT-891 as an SWL! No obscenities, discriminatory, abusive, or other content not suitable in public or for younger readers. Now, go to WSJT-X and verify that signal levels coming in are being heard, and at a level that the software can use. This is shown by the audio level indicator at the bottom left of the screen. The audio level is indicated by a vertical bar. You want the signal at most to be at 80%, lowest around 30%. Adjust your computer microphone level (for the soundcard you are using) until you achieve the audio level needed. The ATAS-25 is a manually-tuned portable antenna system ideal for the FT-817, FT-897, and FT-857 transceivers. Capable of operating on the Amateur bands between 7 MHz and 450 MHz, the ATAS-25 is designed for mounting on a standard 1/4" cameratripod stud (tripod not supplied), and includes an innovative fine-tuning system allowing precise SWR adjustment in the field.Programming frustrations – It can be a challenge to program and customize the unit to your preferences, due to the small screen and some user interface quirks.

The advanced manual for the FT–891 helpfully provides a section called ‘Tools for Comfortable and Effective Reception’, so I began configuring the radio using the guidance there. The FT-891 provides stable 100 Watts (25W AM) of high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitters careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled Dual internal fans and the die cast heat transferring chassis. Ease of use – A clear screen, large multi-function knob, and intuitive design make this mobile transceiver easy to use, especially on-the-go. This post will be updated as I have more information to share as my adventures continue with this radio. I’m also going to try to send you to the manual for things that are already there, so keep it handy. Things You Should Do Right Out of the BoxI love the audio from the FT-891 it sounds so much better than my IC-7300 which is fatiguing to listen to after a while, it seems to have a high noise floor and harshness to the audio and yes NR does help but on the 891 I don’t need to use the NR like I do on the 7300. The filters on the 891 are better too with less bleed over from closer stronger stations and I don’t notice any overloading at all compared to the 7300 which means I have to always play with the RF gain. So since the '706 I've been using older rigs that I restored. Lately an FT-707 and a set of Drake's - R-7 and TR-7.

Next, comes a very odd misnomer. The FT-891 is listed as eating 2 amps on receive, in Yaesu specifications. This scared away portable buyers, and was the source of many negative posts by hams who were waiting for an updated FT-857, yet had never actually tried the new radio. I have no idea why Yaesu claims this high number on receive, because they are incorrect (scroll to the bottom of this article, or search Youtube, for actual tested current draw numbers). The FT-891 listens comfortably at 1 amp. The FT-891 offers operation on all shortwave bands from 160 to 10 m including 60 m as well as on the 6 m band. The transmit power is 100 W in SSB/CW and 40 W in AM. The operating modes are SSB (USB/LSB), CW, AM and FM. Due to its small size, the radio is particularly suitable for installation in a vehicle, but can also be used at home or as a portable radio. The front panel can also be mounted remotely with the YSK-891 option. You can add to or update/edit your existing review's content including the Rating and Time Owned with the Edit button on the right side of the review text body. Edits will go thru the review Approval process. Glad I did and recommend it to anyone who would like a quality, dependable and featured radio for any use, be it at home, mobile or portable. Adjustable signal processing – The aforementioned DSP features can all be tweaked and adjusted, which helps you get exactly the sound you want from this radio.HamRadioConcepts liked the radio in his review, praising its compact size and great overall features, as well as its large selection of programmable buttons and its expandability with additional accessories. I added a Behringer xm8500 mic, and a homebrew patch cable, and my audio showed dramatic improvement -- but I eventually figured out good enough settings for the hand mic that I do not bother (see my other settings article on this blog). Please pay attention to the ALC, however. Keep it peaking at midpoint. Set it too high, and your signal will appear louder on the meter, but you might splatter.
