Let me take you back many years to a very fortunate moment where I was sitting at a bar with Shaun Caleb, master distiller of DDL. Demerara Distillers Limited is in a unique position in the world of rum, continuing to operate the original production stills used on three of the great Sugar Estates of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Long acknowledged as the Caribbean's premier rum, continuously winning major awards over the past decade, El Dorado 15 Year Old Special Reserve is viewed as a fine, cognac-like rum possessing the most intriguing and complex character in its class. Guyana has long been associated with the growing of sugar cane and by extension the production of rum.The 15-year offers hints of raisins and dark fruit flavors that (I think) indicate a sherry cask somewhere in its history. On the nose this rum has scents of dried tropical fruit with aromas of caramel, butterscotch and molasses. First being reduced to their required strengths, our rums are then drawn from the huge stainless stains tanks and laid down for as much as thirty years in 45 gallon oak casks (once-used whisky barrels). It is initially very sweet, apples, bananas and rum soaked raisins but there are also some bittersweet plum like notes. No doubt though that this is amongst the finest rums available with the caveat that this is on the sweeter side. Consistently rated as one, of the best rums in the Caribbean it's full and rich with aromas dark coffee, candied orange, almonds, dark chocolate, pepper and rich vanilla. The 5 is a good baseline rum, the 12 a more complex drink, the 21 is rich, but the 15 is just delicious with a depth of flavour that evolves.

It has all the taste of the best spiced rums I ever tasted PLUS a kick at the end of each sip that is reminiscent of a good scotch. There's definitely more barrel character here which makes this a bolder and oakier rum though still with the same basic flavour profile as the 12 yr old.
