About this deal

Read our article on common kettle and toaster faults and how to fix them for more information. How can I dispose of my old kettle? If you often make tea for one, or just want to save energy, look out for a kettle with a low minimum fill level (less than 300ml). Some kettles will force you to boil as many as four cups' worth in one go, leaving you waiting longer and wasting water and energy.

In fact, most of our Eco Buys have been awarded that title because of their speedy boiling. If a kettle is able to reach a boil in around three minutes, it will use far less energy than one that takes four or five minutes. We've found some brilliant cheaper kettles, and some terrible, expensive ones, so paying more doesn't guarantee a good result. Unlike some larger appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, only a small portion of a kettle's environmental impact will come from day-to-day use. You can make a big difference by opting for a kettle that will last you a long time before it needs to be replaced. You can buy a no-frills own-brand kettle for less than a tenner, so what exactly do you get when you pay more?

Nobody wants to spend half their holiday trying to boil water in a saucepan for that much-needed cup of tea. Travel kettles are compact and affordable, but some can be horribly slow or noisy. Because of the bigger capacity, these kettles are a little larger in size than most travel kettles. Travel kettles tend to be about 17/18cm tall, 10/11cm deep and 15/17cm wide. One of the largest travel kettles we've tested, in both capacity and size, is the Lloytron E886 travel kettle, which has a 0.9 litre capacity, weighs just 0.5kg and measures 20.5x9.5x19cm. Design Dome/pyramid kettles have a traditional domed shape with a handle on the top while jug kettles have a taller jug shape with a handle on the side You'll usually find the water gauge is larger and easier to see on a jug kettle, and the lid can be a bit more fiddly to remove on dome models. Plastic kettles tend to be lighter than stainless steel or glass - less than 1kg is nice and light. It's a common misconception that if a kettle boils faster, it must use more energy. However, we've found that isn't the case. A lot of travel kettles tend to look quite basic and don't have a water gauge, but look out for ones that do - like our Best Buys above - as this can be really useful, allowing you to see how much water you've got to boil and whether you need a refill. The table below summarises this year’s results. Brands are ranked by their customer satisfaction score, which relates to whether or not owners would recommend the brand to a friend. Some kettles have fill indicators that are hidden behind the handle, making them hard to read. Look out for a large, clear windows if you want to be able to see at a glance how much water is left.

However, we’ve found that the savings aren’t all that they seem. Hot water taps, while convenient and stylish, are expensive to buy and often have hidden ongoing maintenance costs which outweigh any potential energy savings. To help you find the best travel kettle, we've put the most popular models through our tough kettle tests, measuring how long they take to boil, how easy they are to use, and whether they'll deposit limescale in your tea. Table notes: The customer satisfaction and fault-free after five years percentages are based on a survey of 9,103 Which? Connect Panel members who own kettles, conducted in May 2021. Table last updated 7 June 2021.You use your kettle every day, so you need to make sure that you won’t be left high and dry by an unreliable brand. That’s why, every two years, we survey thousands of Which? Connect Panel members to tell us whether or not they’re happy with their current kettle, as well as any problems they’ve experienced. You can prolong the life of your kettle by cleaning it regularly. Head to our guide on how to descale a kettle for some handy hints and tips. 3. Problems with auto cut-off (12%) If your kettle is still in working condition and you've simply gone off the design, you can donate it to charity, sell it to someone else or take it to a council reuse centre.
