About this deal

Maybe I shouldn't have stuck with the same genre so soon after, but I didn't enjoy 'Chasing the Dead' half as much.

I was a little bit tentative about this read, unsure what to expect, however upon starting it I was unable to put it down. Read more about the condition Very Good: A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition.Missing persons investigator David Raker doesn’t want the work: it’s clearly a sad but hopeless case of mistaken identity brought to him by a woman unable to let go of her son. I think I'll stick with 3 stars at the moment, but don't be surprised if you're reading this and then see 4. I looked at this book and thought, OK the story idea sounds good - woman gets put through the wringer when her daughter is kidnapped, then I saw that the book was just shy of 200 pages.

A year after the death of her son Alex, Mary Towne is convinced she's seen him alive – and she wants missing persons investigator David Raker to find him. Chasing the Dead is the first in the series and Raker is hired to find Alex Towne by his mother Mary, although reported dead she confirms, to our finder of lost people, that her son is alive. It might not have much creepiness, but it has a lot of great suspense and mystery, coupled with action. My reading 'dips' in and out across busy work days, and I found this book, and its many charachters, rather difficult to keep track of. His fourth novel, Never Coming Back, was selected for the Richard and Judy Book Club, and his work has been nominated for a National Book Award. The "ordinary man in an extraordinary situation" template is all very well, but Raker is so distractingly polite and well balanced, it's hard to believe he has it in him to do as the novel requires and turn vigilante.

Our hero, battling the grief over the loss of his much beloved spouse – which we experience constantly - untangles a nefarious web of dead, but not gone – the twist – victims.Across the loneliest back roads of Massachusetts, in the black expanse of a New England winter, Sue is forced to confront her most awful fears as she is met at each step by ever increasing horrors created by a monster who is surely something less than human. Not his best book IMO A good plot with an unexpected twist at the end, but too full of graphic descriptions of gratuitous violence for my liking - I found it uncomfortable reading. Alex was supposed to have died in a car accident a year before but his body could only be identified through dental records - but a month ago Mary saw Alex walking through London, hence her plea to Raker to investigate.

It was an easy way to spend a few bathroom breaks, a quick read, offered a couple of cheap thrills, and will ultimately be forgotten. Having bought it I may try again in a few months but I still think it will hover around the pile to go to the village hall for others to try. The final showdown is an unintelligible mess that left me rereading the pages multiple times, trying to visualize how the actions described actually occurred. Not the first book I have read in this series but the standard of this one is right up there with the others. At some point though I started to worry that it would turn into a paranormal story, so weird it was! With the skill of masters like Dean Koontz and David Morrell, Joe Schreiber has created a tableau of shock and horror, death and destruction, that will draw you in and never let you go. It begins well and Weaver builds a creepy atmosphere but somewhere round about the middle of the book it all becomes an endless cycle of violent confrontations.
